Throughout the 70s and 80s legions of engineers became entrepreneurial wannabes by designing - and in some cases actually selling - cheap in-circuit emulators.
Though most failed horribly, some of the well-known vendors of today (like Huntsville Microsystems, Softaid, and Orion) started in this manner.
