Feeling secure
While preparing for this month's special feature on security, I had the opportunity to talk to Benjamin Jun, vice president of technology for Cryptography Research, a company that specializes in solving complex data security problems.
He asserts that embedded designers know that security is important; however, in the embedded world, it is not always clear what is meant by ''secure.'' The amount of effort required to make systems secure varies de...

New threats demand new code analysis tools
Developers cannot depend on old code review processes and testing tools to find all the bugs and potential vulnerabilities in today’s connected devices.
Modern static analysis tools, however, provide a complete system view and detect any weaknesses in the code that could lead to a malicious attack.

Legacy code in the security-critical age
The cost and convenience advantages of legacy code reuse can be diminished or complicated when security and safety-critical risks are considered.
If the legacy code is proven to be functionally correct and operationally viable, its acceptance is based on an assumption of what is expected to happen.
However, it is the unexpected that typically causes faults, and structural testing provides a means of mitigating the unexpected.

More than just cryptography: The performance advantages of Suite B compliance
Security is the objective of the National Security Agency’s (NSA’s) Suite B cryptosystem specification.
But what about performance? Especially in military applications, where information has to be both secure and available right now, cryptographic protection can’t be allowed to interfere with functionality.
The ciphers and other algorithms approved for Suite B cryptography achieve tremendous efficiency, holding the potential ...

White Paper: The Cell Broadband Engine processor security architecture
As computers and consumer electronics devices become more connected, platform security becomes increasingly important for everyone from consumers to businesses.
For consumers, privacy of data such as credit card numbers and social security numbers have always been of concern, but now new technologies such as voice-over-IP and personal video blogs bring new privacy concerns.
And for entertainment content owners, piracy is a major concern as the...
