Serial Communication General Concepts
Serial is a very common protocol (not to be confused with Universal Serial Bus or USB) for device communication that comes standard on just about every PC. Most computers include two RS-232 based serial ports. Serial is also a common communication protocol that is used by many devices for instrumentation; numerous GPIB-compatible devices also come with an RS-232 port.

Basics of the RS-485 Standard
What is an RS-485 network? RS-485 allows multiple devices (up to 32) to communicate at half-duplex on a single pair of wires, plus a ground wire (more on that later), at distances up to 1200 meters (4000 feet). Both the length of the network and the number of nodes can easily be extended using a variety of repeater products on the market.

Introduction to Serial Communication
Serial Communication, like any data transfer, requires coordination between the sender and receiver. For example, when to start the transmission and when to end it, when one particular bit or byte ends and another begins, when the receiver's capacity has been exceeded, and so on. A protocol defines the specific methods of coordinating transmission between a sender and receiver.

Introduction to Serial Communications
All IBM PC and compatible computers are typically equipped with two serial ports and one parallel port. Although these two types of ports are used for communicating with external devices, they work in different ways. A parallel port sends and receives data eight bits at a time over 8 separate wires. This allows data to be transferred very quickly; however, the cable required is more bulky because of the number of individual wires it must contain
