Accelerated ROI by Migrating to Advanced MPLS Services
Are you exploring MPLS (Multi-Protocol Label Switching) and all the benefits that it touts? Affordability End-to-end quality Security Reduced costs With MPLS, you can scale your network architecture, without compromising requirements or limiting functionality or performance. So what exactly is MPLS and is it the right network for you? This whitepaper by INS (International Network Services), one of the world’s largest...

Introduction to MPLS
I've been looking at MPLS, Multiprotocol Label Switching, over the last couple of months. Cisco has some pretty good slideware on the topic, but there have been some things I had wanted to drill down on and understand better. I can't say for sure that I'm all the way there yet. But this month I'd like to share with you some of the basics of MPLS. It may take another article or two to finish this topic.

Multiprotocol Label Switching
MPLS emerged from the IETF’s effort to standardize a number of proprietary multilayer switching solutions that were initially proposed in the mid-1990s. To help you appreciate the importance of MPLS and its impact on the Internet core, the first half of this paper describes the forces that motivated the development and evolution of these different solutions. . .

Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS)
Multiprotocol Label Switch, or MPLS, has its roots in many of the early tagging and label swapping protocols. To present an incomplete list, Ipsilon’s IP Switching, IBM’s Aggregate Route-based IP Switching and Cisco’s Tag switching, all developed proprietary approaches to provide data forwarding using labels.

Traffic Engineering With Multiprotocol Label Switching
The white paper provides a problem definition providing the motivation for MPLS and traffic engineering. The core value of MPLS is then described followed by a discussion of three MPLS applications: shortcut routing, tunnel restoration, and integration of MPLS with Quality of Service. The last section provides a detailed analysis of MPLS signaling and the application of traffic engineering.
