Understanding PCI Bus, PCI-Express and In finiBand Architecture
There is some confusion in the market place concerning the replacement of the PCI Bus (Peripheral Components Interface) by either the InfiniBand SM Architecture (IBA), PCI-Express (formerly 3GIO - Third Generation I/O), or upgrades to the PCI bus itself.
Initially the InfiniBand architec-ture was viewed as the replacement for the PCI bus, yet the PCISIG (PCI Special Interest Group) recently announced that PCI-Express would replace the PCI bus.

An Introduction to the InfiniBand Architecture
The InfiniBand Architecture (IBA) is a new industry-standard architecture for server I/O and inter-server communication.
It was developed by the InfiniBandSM Trade Association (IBTA) to provide the levels of reliability, availability, performance, and scalability necessary for present and future server systems, levels significantly better than can be achieved with bus-oriented I/O structures.
This chapter provides a description of the...

InfiniBand
InfiniBand is a switched fabric communications link primarily used in high-performance computing.
Its features include quality of service and failover, and it is designed to be scalable.
The InfiniBand architecture specification defines a connection between processor nodes and high performance I/O nodes such as storage devices.
It is a superset of the Virtual Interface Architecture.

What is Infiniband?
InfiniBand is a type of communications link for data flow between processors and I/O devices that offers throughput of up to 2.5 gigabytes per second and support for up to 64,000 addressable devices.
Because it is also scalable and supports quality of service (QoS) and failover, InfiniBand is often used as a server connect in high-performance computing (HPC) environments.
The internal data flow system in most PCs and server systems is...

Linux Infiniband Project
The Linux InfiniBand Project is a collection of sub-projects and activities all focused around the common goal of providing the operating system software components needed to support an InfiniBand fabric, specifically for the Linux operating system.
The architecture for several of these components is further influenced by existing and emerging standards that define uniform protocols for components of the operating system.
