Introduction to IPv6 Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) is a new version of the Internet Protocol (IP), designed to support the continued growth of the Internet, while enabling a wider range of Internet-connected devices. IPv6 is the successor to the widely deployed Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4). IPv6 is being standardized in the IPv6 working group of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF).
