8051 News and New Products

As part of eg3.com 's e-clips service, we track the keyword, 8051 extensively. Each week for registered subscribers we send out alerts to any news, new products, webinars, seminars, and other items of interest to keyword-8051 subscribers. That said, here is a more subjective round up of recent 8051 developments.

First up, Nuvoton released their new 8-bit microcontroller, the N79E352. With the merits of higher processing speed, the performance of N79E352 is 2.5 times faster comparing with the traditional 8051 under same operating frequency. The external oscillator frequency could be up to 24 MHz, with 8K program flash memory (Flash ROM), 128B data flash, the built-in the internal accurate 11M/22M RC oscillator and the I2C interface. N79E352 is equipped with 40pin DIP, 44pin PLCC/QFP and 48pin LQFP packages that satisfy the demands of customers who use the standard 8051 products originally. (Details, here ).

SST released its FlashFlex family of 8-bit microcontrollers (MCUs), the SST89C58RC. The new device is the industry's first 8051-based MCU to feature two system management buses (SMBus), each supporting up to 400 Kbit per second data throughput, in a tiny 6mm x 6mm QFN package. Its dual SMBus feature, small form factor and support for a wide range of operating voltages make the SST89C58RC MCU an ideal solution for numerous applications, including HDMI, HDTVs, A/V receivers, home appliances, industrial instruments, notebook PCs, DVD players, Blu-ray players, RF modules and security applications such as fingerprint identification. As discussed in our Intellectual Property section, IP is one of the big trends in the 8051. Here are some of the biggest news items in that area:

As you can see, most of the news is on the chip and IP front; the tools vendors continue to support the 8051 but most will admit that they see more money in 32-bit architectures. Indeed, Keil is actively seeking to encourage people to migrate up to 32-bit ARM.
